In addition to his work with the throwers, Legas has worked with the pole vaulters since the event was added for women in 1998. In his first season as the vault coach, Legas guided Becky Jackson to All-America honors at the indoor championships.

A native of Ogden, Utah, Legas qualified for the 1968 Olympic trials in the javelin throw, but was unable to compete because of injury. As an undergraduate at BYU, he earned three letters in football, four in track and field, and held the school record in the javelin throw.

After graduating from BYU with a B.S. degree in physical education in 1971, he began a military career in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the All-Air Force track and field team for nine years and served as intercollegiate track and field coach at the Air Force Academy for four years. During that time, he coached various sports and conducted clinics at numerous Air Force bases in Europe, emphasizing the throwing events and the decathlon.

Throughout his military career, Legas continued to compete in multiple events. In 1981 he was the Masters Decathlon national champion, setting an American record. He gained extensive international experience as a member of the U.S. International Aeronautical Pentathlon Team in Norway in 1988 and at other European sites in the 60s and 70s. At the 1971 World Games in Helsinki, Finland, he placed 11th in the javelin throw.

Legas earned an M.S. degree summa cum laude in aeronautical sciences from Embry Riddle University in 1987.

A decorated pilot who flew in Operation Desert Storm, he retired from the Air Force in September of 1991 with the rank of lieutenant colonel. In 1993, he won the U.S. National Masters Championship Pentathlon title at a Provo meet.

His coaching has helped BYU produce a strong throws, vault and multi-event program. He has coached numerous All-Americans and four Olympians during his career. Legas also took over as the recruiting coordinator and has played an important role in bringing many of the high quality athletes from all over the world to BYU.

Legas is married to the former Megan Cresap, and they have four children -Adam, Melinda, Tadd, and Maren.
