Thank you for your interest in the cheerleading program at Brigham Young University.
BYU Cheer Squad Spring Tryouts:
Friday - April 25, 2008 and Saturday - April 26, 2008
8:00 AM – 10:00 PM
NEW this year! The University is expanding the cheerleading program to consist of two cheer squads! We are turning to the traditions of years past and re-introducing the Blue Squad and White Squad. The Blue Squad (composed of six to twelve women and six to twelve men) will cheer for Football and Men’s Basketball. Blue Squad members also receive a partial scholarship of $500.00 a semester. The White Squad (composed of six to twelve women and six to twelve men) will cheer for Women’s Volleyball and Women’s Basketball. The White Squad may also be invited to cheer at some home Football games at the discretion of the coaching staff. Both teams will represent the University at various public relations events and special appearances. Blue Squad and White Squad members will audition to represent the University at a National competition in the Large Co-Ed Cheer category.
Our goal at tryouts is to select the BEST overall individuals to represent Brigham Young University and the Athletic Department on the Cheer Squads. Slightly different criteria are used to select each squad. When selecting the Blue Squad, we are looking for individuals that demonstrate advanced proper technical skills, ability to interact with and lead the crowd effectively, excellent athletic abilities, noteworthy cheerleading experience, and poise under pressure. Generally, these are individuals who will be ready and prepared to contribute to the program immediately. When selecting the White Squad, which is a feeder squad to the Blue Squad, we are looking for less experienced cheerleaders and yell leaders who demonstrate proper technical skills, ability to interact with and lead the crowd, poise, athletic ability, and most importantly potential to contribute to the Blue Squad in the future. These individuals may not always be the most experienced at this time, but show the most potential to contribute to the program in the near future. We highly encourage current BYU students who are interested in our program but have little stunting experience to tryout for the White Squad. We also encourage incoming freshman and transfer students who are not experienced in partner stunting or may not be as advanced in tumbling skills to tryout for the White Squad. White Squad is the training, and feeder squad for Blue Squad. Some White Squad members who display hard work, great attitudes, and a substantial increase in athletic ability and technical skills over the summer may, at the discretion of the coaching staff and determined needs of the Blue Squad, may be moved up to the Blue Squad in August, or after the Fall Tryout in September.

- Complete and send university admissions applications to the admissions office before the designated deadlines. You MUST apply to the University in order to tryout. All applicants are permitted to tryout for the team regardless of whether they have been accepted or not, but all applicants MUST apply to the University. For more information about admissions deadlines please contact the admissions office at admissions@byu.edu
- Download the Tryout Applicationfrom this web page and fill it out. Make sure you include a recent photograph of yourself (still Photo), and provide the appropriate insurance numbers and medical release signature(s).
- Send the tryout application and fee to the address listed below. There is a $20.00 non-refundable tryout fee that will be used to pay for the judges and all other tryout expenses. Please make the check or money order payable to the B.Y.U. CHEER SQUAD, and include the applicant's name on the payment. Please do not send cash.
- Obtain two Letters of Recommendation. These letters are confidential and should be mailed by the respondent in a sealed envelope directly to the address below. If you have been a member of a cheerleading program in the last three years, one of your recommendations MUST be from your former advisor or coach. Letters of Recommendation may also be faxed to 801.422.0917 attention Cheer Squad Tryouts.
- Obtain a medical physical performed by a medical doctor (signed paperwork). You must bring this with you to register for tryouts on April 25th. For the required medical physical paperwork you need to bring with you to tryouts, you may use your doctor’s standard physical form or pick one up from the BYU training room to be filled out by your doctor BEFORE April 25th. The tryout physical form can also be found online on the athletic departments Home Page. (Go to the athletic department link on your left, then click on the ATH TRAINING tab at the top, and the tryout physical forms should be on that menu.)
- Practice and Prepare for a physically demanding tryout. (Watch the skills video and read the tryout judging criteria so you can prepare accordingly!) We expect those auditioning to be in top physical condition. Because of the heavy physical demands on collegiate cheerleaders, strength, conditioning and flexibility are necessary to reduce the potential for injury. If you have undergone medical treatment for any injuries in the past five years, you must obtain a physician's release prior to the tryouts.
- Return all application requirements to the address below by April 24th or in person at registration on April 25th. We highly recommend you complete everything well in advance to allow for mail delivery delays. Everything is due PRIOR to the orientation meeting. Coach's discretion is used to determine if an applicant has correctly met all audition requirements.
