John Brooks joins the BYU staff for the 2008-09 season after serving the past two seasons as an assistant coach for UNLV's men's and women's programs.
A talented young coach and strong recruiter, Brooks' expertise as a coach has landed him coveted invitations to work with world-class athletes at Georgia and Alabama. A 2003 economics graduate and swimming letterwinner at the University of Utah, Brooks served as a volunteer coach at his alma mater in 2005-06, where he coached the sprint and stroke groups. With Brooks on the staff, the Ute women's squad won the Mountain West regular season and championship meet trophies, while the men's team placed 23rd at the NCAA Championships.
Before coaching at Utah, he served a successful stint as the head coach of the boys and girls teams at East High School (Salt Lake City) from 2001-2004. He guided East High to state titles in 2003 and 2004 after a runner-up finish in 2002. He was name the state high school coach of the year in 2002 and 2004. While at East High, he coached a total of 10 All-Americans, four state swimmers of the year, and nine swimmers went on to earn Division I scholarships.
