In his 16th year at the helm of the BYU men's golf program, Bruce Brockbank Jr., continues the tradition of excellence that the Cougar golf program has been known for throughout the years.
A native of Provo, Brockbank joined the BYU golf team in 1983 after a stellar prep and amateur career that included two Utah State Amateur Championships. Following an LDS mission to South Carolina, Brockbank returned to the Cougar squad in 1985 and was named First Team All-WAC twice as well as earning Third Team All-American and Academic All-American honors during his senior season in 1988. In that final year of play for the Cougars, he also won medalist honors at the prestigious Western Intercollegiate in Santa Cruz, Calif.
He won the Utah State Amateur title in 1987, between his junior and senior years at BYU, and again in 1988 after completing his eligibility. He was named Utah Amateur Golfer of the Year in 1983 and again in 1988. A member of the PGA of America, Brockbank turned pro in 1989 and competed throughout the Utah area in sectional events.
Before being tabbed head coach in April of 1992, Brockbank served as an assistant coach for four years under the tutelage of BYU Hall of Fame Coach Karl Tucker.
In his time at the helm of the Cougar squad, he has coached 18 All-Americans, including 2007 First-Team All-American Daniel Summerhays, four-time All-American Andy Miller, who qualified for the PGA Tour in 2002, and two-time All-Americans Manuel Merizalde, Oscar Alvarez and Jake Ellison. He has also coached several other All-Americans including Todd Miller (2004), Jose Garrido (1999), Billy Harvey (1999), Todd Pence (1995) and Eric Rustand (1994). As a Cougar assistant in 1992, he also helped coach Second Team All-American and current PGA Tour star Mike Weir. He has also helped guide current PGA Tour pro Dean Wilson during his career.
His players have earned 38 All-Conference citations, including three conference championship winners; Andy Miller in 1997, Merizalde in 1999 and Nick Becker in 2005 as well as the 2006 MWC Player of the Year Jake Ellison. He has coached five conference freshmen of the year including Matt Thurmond (1994), Michael Henderson (1996), Andy Miller (1997), Daniel Summerhays (2003) and Robbie Fillmore (2007). He has also coached eight Academic All-Americans.
Brockbank has led his teams to 36 tournament wins, including the conference titles in 1995, 1999, 2001 and 2007. In 1999-2000, he led BYU to seven tournament wins, more than any other team in the nation and was named the 2000 Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year. He has earned conference Coach of the Year five different times including, WAC Coach of the Year in 1994 and again in 1999 and back-to-back Coach of the Year honors in 2006 and 2007.
In 1999, Brockbank led his team to a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Championships. Brockbank was named Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA)
District VII Coach of the Year for 1999. In 2000, Brockbank guided his team to a second-place finish at the NCAA West Regionals and was again named District VII Coach of the Year. In 2004 he led his team to a fifth-place NCAA West Regionals finish and ninth-place NCAA Championship finish, his third top-10 finish in his career. In 2005, Brockbanks Cougars placed fourth at the NCAA Championships, his best finish as a head coach and the best finish for BYU since they won the national title in 1981. In 2006, his team earned his third consecutive top-15 finish at the NCAA Championship by finishing in 15th place.
In 2006-07, after capturing his fourth conference championship, he earned his fourth GCAA District VII Coach of the Year Award. Brockbank served on the GCAA Academic All-American Committee for four years and on the Academic All-American committee for 11 years.
In 1990, Brockbank earned a bachelor's degree in recreation management with a minor in health education from BYU. He added a master's degree in the same subject in 1992. He married Lisa Carman in 1986, and they are the parents of four children; a son, Jordan, and three daughters, McCale, McKenzie and Ashton.
