Vaughn Alvey enters his fifth season as the BYU pitching coach after guiding BYU to its best pitching performance in 2008. With Alveys guidance, the pitching staff combined for three no-hit performances and 2.16 ERA.
Before coming to BYU, Alvey coached for 17 seasons at Alta High School, leading the Hawks to eight state titles, including three consecutive championships from 1999-2001.
As a player, he represented the nation as a pitcher on two U.S. teams inthe Pan-American games, bringing home silver medals in 1983 (Caracas, Venezuela), and in 1987 (Indianapolis, Ind.). He also represented the nation at the 1986 and 1993 Olympic Sports Festivals.
Alvey was inducted to the Utah Sports Hall of Fame in Nov. 2001. He was also honored in the spring of 2000 when Alta High School named its new softball field Vaugh T. Alvey Field.
Alvey has coached in girls summer programs for 12 years winning numerous state and regional championships. His teams have qualified for nationals all 12 seasons and won the AFA National Championship in 1992.
He is married to Kay and is the father of five children: Brett, Shad, Cody, Kirsten and Cassie. His family resides in Sandy, Utah.
