PROVO, Utah (May 5, 2000)--Jeremy Cook threw 142 pitches through nine innings Friday to give San Diego State a 16-5 victory over BYU.
The 6-6 senior stood tall in improving his record to 6-4 as he mixed his pitches well as the Aztecs pounded 23 hits off four BYU pitchers. SDSU batted around the order in the six-run first and six-run fifth innings.
When lead-off batter Andy Litteral was hit by Micah Mangrum's fourth pitch of the day and doubled in on the next pitch by Edgar Gonzales, it was an omen of things to come. The Aztecs chased Mangrum from the mound in the third inning with only one strikeout to his credit, compared to the 13 he recorded last month against them at San Diego.
The Cougars, now 26-24 overall and 14-12 in the Mountain West Conference, also scored in the first inning when Craig Peterson singled and was driven home by Michael Davies.
Peterson was a perfect four-of-four on the afternoon, driving in Casey Cloward in the second inning for his only RBI of the day.
The Cougars also got a two-fence solo homer by Matt Carson who hit the first pitch thrown to him in the fifth inning. But the Aztecs snuffed Cougar rallies in the first, third and sixth innings with double plays which closed those innings with runners aboard.
"We got a lot of meaningless singles with two outs and didn't get key hits when we needed them," said BYU Coach Vance Law. "This was one of those games that our pitching staff didn't do what they are capable of doing."
Gonzales, Jacob Minter, Chad Chop and Chad Redfern each had three RBI. Minter had a three-run homer and Chop had a two-run dinger, both in the fifth inning. The Aztecs, now 27-25 and 15-10 for second place in the league, play a noon game on Saturday in Provo to close the six-game series.
