One of the other top conference awards went to Carlee Payne who was named MWC Freshman of the Year.
PROVO, Utah (Nov. 3, 2009) - Senior Hermann Trophy Candidate Andrea Willis received her second consecutive MWC Defensive Player of Year award, Tuesday. Also garnering one of the other top awards was Carlee Payne who was named MWC Freshman of the Year.
Willis has anchored BYU's defense this year allowing just 11 goals to date. In Willis' four years, and 89 games played as a Cougar, she's been a part of a defense that has only allowed a total of 51 goals. Willis has been named MWC Player of the Week twice and been nationally recognized by TopDrawerSoccer.com and Soccer America.
Payne was recognized for her outstanding play in her freshman season. She leads the Cougars with 12 goals and 10 assists to date. During the 2009 MWC race she placed first in assists with four, third in points with eight, and seventh in goals with two.
She was also named to the All-MWC First Team along with teammates Andrea Willis, Kassidy C. Shumway, and McKinzie Olson. All four started in every game this year.
Freshman defender Lindsi Lisonbee was named to the All-MWC Second team after also being a part of BYU's outstanding defensive line. Lisonbee started every game for the Cougars this season.
The awards are selected by the league's eight head coaches.
