Coach Rose Press Conference
PROVO, Utah (June 24, 2009) – With a gracious and optimistic outlook, BYU men’s basketball coach Dave Rose addressed the media on Wednesday afternoon to explain his recent pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor cancer diagnosis and treatment.
Rose, along side Dr. Scott Samuelson of the Huntsman Cancer Institute, explained Rose’s health and treatment plan, while his wife and members of the BYU men’s basketball team watched from the side.
“I’ve been met with a challenge,” Rose said. “But the challenge is manageable.”
Rose’s current treatment involves rest and Samuelson, the son of BYU President Cecil O. Samuelson, broke down Rose’s treatment. There is not a role for chemotherapy or radiation and there is no need for more surgery. The tumor has been completely removed and the medical staff will closely monitor Rose.
Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor cancer is a less aggressive and less common form of cancer than the more common pancreatic adenocarcinoma cancer, Samuelson explained.
While he continues to recuperate Rose has confidently and comfortably handed the recruiting and day-to-day basketball operations to the rest of the staff. During the regular season he sees himself back on the sidelines, looking for a fourth-straight Mountain West Conference title.
“I am going to appreciate every day, every practice and every game,” Rose said.
